Done With #8: For Sale

In the age that indie games are everywhere, there seem to be an endless stream of horror games that are inspired by the likes for Slenderman and FNAF. While it's cool at first, it does eventually feel like you're playing the same game over and over.
What really caught by attention with For Sale is that the trailer and the concept of the game is rather simple. Sure, it feels like Outlast with you holding a camera, but framing with how you play as someone whose job is to take photos for real estate listing is quite interesting. And with its low price point it feels like it doesn't hurt to try out.
Welp, time to take some photos...

The first thing that is absolutely attention grabbing is its incredible menu that uses camera as the menu navigation and the journal that keeps getting updated throughout the 2 hours playtime. The little details and love put into the UI really shows here, like how the camera screen will always show the most recent photo we take. Collarpill really made one convincing UX here.

Horror genre needs the atmosphere to be believable, and For Sale also sells in this department really well. The house feels like an actual house that is populated by real human. Small yet humourous details, such as dirty magazine being hidden in a teenager's room, does tell a story of it's occupance.
The game also has collectibles bear keychains scattered around that encourage you to explore the place while navigating this nightmare of a place. They aren't very easy to find if you are not observant, however they are one of those that make you feel a bit dumb when you see them.

However, despite its great atmosphere, the last 10 minutes really exposes the game for being lacking in narrative.
Despite introducing us to plot threads about the previous owners mysteriously disappearing, the game fails to provide an explanation or a satisfying conclusion. Without spoiling too much, the ending was so weak that it bogs down a 4/5 game to a mere 3. It could be due to budget constraint, but nevertheless it's incredibly disappointing.
There are also three alternative endings to the game that are honestly better than the default endings. 2 being jokes ending and one being an early quiter ending. Not the hardest to unlock so try to find them if possible.

Regardless, this game showcases Collarpill's potential to make an amazing horror game. It has great idea, it has a lot of love and care put into it, but it really did lack story direction which prevents it from being something I can fully recommend unless you have some spare time. However, it is exciting to see what they will be doing next, and I look forward to that.
