Done With #6: Rift of the NecroDancer

At first I was going to review and play Civilization VII but with the current state of that game, I think we'll need to wait it out.
I spent 7 hours straight after seeing it on Steam Family Share, finishing its main quest and getting the custom songs in one night.
Easily my favourite game so far ever since I started doing these reviews. Let's talk about why that's the case.

If you are a fan of DDR or Guitar Hero, this is a must play. No skip allowed.
Crypt of the NecroDancer devs, Brace Yourself Games, return with probably their best game to date. This time with this dang thing being a full blown rhythm game (compare to its roguelike action rhythm older sibling). If you're familiar with their games, you would know that they're incredibly challenging and rage inducing. This is the case with Rift... as this is probably the most complex DDR-style rhythm game I've ever played. However, it is also incredibly rewarding and fulfilling, with beating a song feeling like an achievement rather than a frustrating experience.

One of the biggest selling point of this game is the Steam Workshop integration which allows for this game to have endless possibility as long as the community is active. I've tried a few songs on here, like the classic MEGALOVANIA from Undertale and the PaRappa soundtracks, which showcase this game's full potential with the easy to use level editors that help modders create and upload mods.

However, this also leads to a worry of mine. This game will be relying a lot on the community to stay fresh, so once the community abandons it or when the trend dies down, the game might suffer from the content draught. While the game itself comes with 40+ songs, what keeps rhythm games alive is an active library of playable songs. Longetivity is important for legacy of these kind of games (looking at you, Guitar Hero 5 and 6).

As you've been seeing in many screenshots, there are multiple mini games that are both hilarious and rage inducing to play. Since these are side content, it doesn't feel bad failing them. In fact, it's really funny to see when we fail. They are random, they are funny and they are certainly a great time.

This game's art and interface are also stylish and make the game much more appealing by tenfold. The usage of cartoon drawing to tell the game's simple yet hilarious story is excellent. If you've played Crypt, there're a lot of references to that and you will find yourself laughing a lot. However, the jokes and the story are also written for people who has not played Crypt, so there's no pressure or worries in that department. With the songs expertly crafted and place to enhance the story beats, they made a very strong campaign with clear progression in terms of difficulty and the story.

Rift of the Necromancer is a complete package and is one of the most feature complete rhythm game ever made. There's also a playable demo on Steam if you are not sure about getting it or its difficulty, so check that out before buying. However, if you are really a fan of the genre, this is seriously a must own.
